Terms of Service

By downloading, installing, or using CrohnOlogy ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not install or use the App.

1. Nature of the service

CrohnOlogy is a personal hobby project created and maintained by an individual developer (hello@crohnology.net). It is not a company, a registered business, a healthcare provider, or a commercial product. It was built to meet a personal family need and is shared publicly to help other families managing gastrointestinal conditions.

The App is provided free of charge. There is no advertising, no subscription, and no sale of user data.

2. Eligibility and family accounts

To create a family group as an Administrator ("Admin"), you must be at least 18 years old and legally able to enter into a binding agreement.

If you log health information about a child, or invite a minor to join a family timeline, you confirm that you are the child's parent or legal guardian, or that you have the parent or guardian's explicit permission to record and share that information within the family group.

3. Not medical advice

CrohnOlogy is a personal symptom and health logging diary. It records what you and your authorised family members enter, so you can review your own history and share context with your healthcare providers.

The App does not:

  • Diagnose, predict, treat, cure, or manage any medical condition
  • Provide medical advice, clinical recommendations, or diagnostic interpretations
  • Verify medication dosages, check for drug interactions or contraindications, or act as a fail-safe medication reminder
  • Replace consultation with a qualified healthcare professional

Charts, timelines, growth plots, and pattern summaries in the App are automated tallies of the entries you have logged — such as how often a food label was followed by symptoms. They are not clinical interpretations, safety assurances, or confirmed medical triggers.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider about any medical condition or medication change. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking care because of something you logged or saw in the App.

4. Not a regulated medical device

CrohnOlogy is not a medical device under UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulations or any equivalent framework elsewhere, and it is not connected to the NHS or any healthcare provider's clinical systems. It does not process insurance claims.

The App is engineered to align with UK GDPR principles — the Privacy Policy explains how your data is handled — but it is a personal project, not a regulated health service. Its security measures (zero-knowledge encryption, biometric authentication) are engineering choices, not regulatory certifications.

5. Acceptable use and your responsibilities

You are responsible for the accuracy and lawfulness of the notes, measurements, medication records, and photos logged in your family timeline. By using the App, you agree not to:

  • Log or upload personal or health information about anyone without their consent or your legal authority as their parent, guardian, or authorised carer
  • Upload unlawful, abusive, or harmful content to the App's cloud infrastructure
  • Probe, scan, reverse-engineer, bypass the security rules of, or otherwise disrupt the Firebase services behind the App
  • Share your device's biometric unlock or your Google account credentials with someone who should not have them

If a third party makes a claim against the developer because of how you used the App — for example a breach of these Terms or logging someone's data without authority — you agree to cover the resulting loss and expense.

6. Your data and encryption keys

Your personal and health data is governed by our Privacy Policy. All health logs and photos are encrypted on your device before upload. The developer holds no encryption keys and cannot view, recover, or decrypt your health data.

You are responsible for securing your device (including an active screen lock and biometric authentication) and for storing your Family Recovery Passphrase safely. If both the passphrase and Admin re-invite access are lost, your encrypted history becomes permanently inaccessible.

7. No warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties or conditions of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. The developer does not warrant or guarantee that:

  • The App or its cloud backend will be available at all times, uninterrupted, or error-free
  • The App will be free of bugs, defects, calculation errors, or security vulnerabilities
  • Any data stored via the App will be preserved indefinitely or without loss
  • The App will meet your particular requirements or be fit for any particular purpose

8. Service availability and termination

CrohnOlogy is a free, unstaffed personal project. The developer may modify, suspend, restrict, or permanently discontinue the App (or any part of its cloud infrastructure) at any time, with or without notice and without liability to you.

The developer may also suspend or end your access to the backend service immediately if you breach these Terms or abuse the cloud infrastructure. You may stop using the App and delete your account and associated data at any time from the app's settings.

9. Limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits the developer's liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under the laws of England and Wales.

Subject to that, the developer is not liable (whether in contract, tort, breach of statutory duty, or otherwise) for any loss or damage arising out of your use of, or inability to use, the App, including:

  • Loss, corruption, or permanent inaccessibility of logged data or encryption keys
  • Inaccurate display, grouping, or aggregation of entries, medications, or timelines
  • Clinical, dietary, medication, or care decisions made in reliance on anything recorded or shown in the App
  • Any medical outcome or health complication, whether or not related to a condition tracked in the App
  • Unauthorised access to your device or family timeline through physical access to the device, a compromised Google account, or a disclosed recovery passphrase

Because the App does not yet offer data export, keep your own independent record of anything critical — prescriptions, consultations, history you need for ongoing care.

10. Changes to these Terms

The developer may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date and, where appropriate, flagged inside the App. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

11. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with these Terms or your use of the App.
